Nothing is fixed – or what we can learn from 2020.

What we can learn from 2020.

Nothing is fixed – we all learned that last year. Let's think back to January 2020 - we didn't expect a global pandemic - and now? Yes, hopefully we'll be through it soon and have learned a lot, a lot. The event industry in particular has had a lot of time to think and some exciting concepts have emerged, which we will hopefully see many of in the near future. The year 2020 was turbulent – that much is certain. Here are a few learnings that we can definitely take with us from this exciting time:

1. Events cannot be planned 100%.

Sure, events have never been able to be planned in 100% - you learn that the hard way at your first event. But what happened in 2020 topped it all off. Who can say today whether an event can take place tomorrow or not? Who else dares to do that? That's why it's more important now than ever to always have another solution ready. And of course backups, backups, backups - this of course requires more planning effort, but minimizes the risk of failure.

2. What was planned will not happen.

Since Corona, you always have to have a plan B (and a plan C and D) with you. Because we simply don't know exactly what the future will bring and what future events will look like. A good plan B is always a digital version of the event that you can switch to if necessary.

3. Digitalization is here.

The event industry is also being affected by digitalization. Tickets are bought online, press kits are available to download and detailed information can only be found on the internet anyway. This is how digitalization will continue at the event. On-site visitor management or interactive content are implemented digitally using smartphones etc. and are therefore an integral part of an event. The ideas and opportunities to generate new visitor experiences are huge and are still at the beginning of an exciting time in this area.

4. New concepts – new professional groups.

The new event concepts also bring about a change in the event team. At the beginning of 2020, the streaming technician wasn't even known, but today he is one of the most important people in a production. Event managers for virtual events are in high demand and web developers have also been part of every event team since 2020.

5. Change is embraced.

It didn't take long for the first Instagram events and Facebook streams to take place after the pandemic began. The popularity of such events has risen quickly and almost everyone has now attended a digital event. The year 2020 showed us that digital events work and are also popular. This will continue to be the case in the next few years. We are sure of that.

We are looking forward to this time and are very confident that it will continue to be exciting. When the pandemic is over and large events are possible again, the virtual site will still remain in some form. Whether as a simple visitor management application or as a digital experience to take with you around the world is still open and will be different for each event. One thing is certain: digital events are here to stay
